It’s our last day. I can’t believe it’s come round so quickly, really; we’ve been away nearly four weeks but it doesn’t feel like it at all.
The weather was excessively hot again today, so we spent a good part of the day hiding, either in the garden under a parasol or in the house, under the ceiling fan.
When it was cool enough to emerge, we stocked up on essentials for tomorrow’s journey, then my friend took us for a sight-seeing drive through some old towns where they burned witches, apparently, on to some windmills – they are the new mountain – and finally to the Ouddorp to watch the sun go down and the sea lions doing whatever it is that sea lions do.
It was an unexpectedly perfect end to what’s been a fabulous mini-adventure. When it was announced that we were going to the seaside, I was really happy because, while we didn’t get to do everything or go everywhere we wanted, I unexpectedly fulfilled one of the earliest ideas I had while planning the trip: going to the seaside for an ice-cream for my birthday. I’d abandoned this originally – Pula, Constanta, and Burgas had all been mooted – to avoid too many people and too much travel – as if I now think that such a thing is even possible!
After we’d watched the sun go down over the North Sea, we had a frikandel and frittes then drove back via Stellendam to see the windmill that’s literally in the middle of the road. I’m not sure which came first, but it’s an impressive windmill.
“I do like a good…” is a phrase that companion and I have taken to using during our travels. And I do like a good end to a trip.
