Lots of things were closed today. It seems Mondays and Tuesdays are the new weekend.
I wanted to go to the KGB Museum on the top floor of the Hotel Viru but when I looked I discovered the tours are only at the end of the week, so it’s unlikely I’ll manage it this time. No matter, I thought — I’d go to the KGB Cells instead, but they were suffering from the same affliction. I didn’t look to see if there was anything else to do, instead having another little door-hunt and a mini-supermarket shop to stock up until the end of the week.
There might have been some hõõgvein.
In the evening, I went to the Holy Spirit Church for the free organ concert and made the donation, as previously negotiated.
Host previously explained to me that the Holy Spirit Church is something of a peculiarity in as much as it doesn’t face east, like most Christian churches do. This leads people who think about such things to surmise that although the church is one of the oldest structures in Tallinn, there must have been buildings on the east side which were, at the time, in the way but have since gone.
The clock on the façade is Tallinn’s oldest, dating to the 17th century. Inside, there is a pretty altar from the 15th century and a pulpit built in 1597, in front of which I sat for the short programme of three pieces, which lasted about 45 minutes:
- Jesus Christus, unser Heiland – Franz Tunder (1614-1667)
- Eesti rahvaviisid II vihik – Edgar Arro (1911-1978)
- Prelüüd ja fuuga teemal B-A-C-H – Franz Liszt (1811-1886)
I knew the Liszt from a previous existence. The Arro was tremendous fun.
The forecast is giving snow for tomorrow.
